Sleep Supplements

Supplements to Support Your Night-Time Routine

Magnesium is our customers' top pick here, most often as a simple capsule. If you'd rather have something warm, there are cacao and hot chocolate blends to make before bed. Plant-based formulas with ashwagandha or L-theanine are another option. You'll also find a few made for perimenopause and menopause.

About Sleep Supplements

How to Choose a Sleep Supplement

Start with the format you're most likely to keep taking. Capsules are quickest, while a powder drink can replace your usual evening cuppa. Then read the ingredient list. If you already take a multivitamin or another supplement, check you're not doubling your magnesium or zinc.

Small Changes at Bedtime

Going to bed at roughly the same time each night is one of the simplest changes you can make. A short skincare routine helps too, as a signal that the day is done. If ashwagandha appeals, browse our full range of ashwagandha supplements.

Magnesium Supplements to Take Before Bed

Magnesium outsells everything else in this collection, and most of our customers choose the bisglycinate form. That's magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine, sometimes just called glycinate. Terranova and Cytoplan both use it in simple capsules. DR.VEGAN takes a different route. Its magnesium citrate gives you 200mg in each capsule, so you need fewer to reach your daily amount.

Bedtime Drinks and Night-Time Powders

Prefer to sip than swallow? Sixways Unwind + Recover blends reishi and ashwagandha into a rich cacao you can make with hot water or milk. MyOva Magnesium Nightcap is a hot chocolate with 250mg of magnesium per serving. It also contains vitamin B6, which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Not a fan of hot drinks? ARTAH Sleep Tonic is a liquid supplement instead.

Herbal and Plant-Based Night-Time Blends

L-theanine turns up in a lot of our evening formulas. Terranova sells it on its own at 100mg per capsule, while Youth & Earth Chillaxcine pairs it with ashwagandha and saffron. Ashwagandha is the other name to look out for. It's a plant used for centuries in Ayurvedic practice. LYMA includes it in its daily formula, and ARTAH adds it to the Sleep Tonic.

Expert Tip for Sleep Supplements

"Take your supplement at the same time each evening so it becomes a habit, and give it a few weeks before you judge it. I'd also start with one product rather than layering several. That way you know what's working for you. Your bedroom matters as much as what you take. A darker room and no phone for the last half hour are worth trying before you add a second supplement."

Frequently Asked Questions

What are sleep supplements?

They're food supplements made to take before bed. Most in this collection are built around magnesium, while others use plant extracts like ashwagandha. They aren't sleeping pills, and none of them contain melatonin.

Is magnesium good for sleep?

There's a lot of interest in magnesium and sleep, and the research is still developing. What we can say is that magnesium contributes to the normal function of your nervous system and to normal psychological function. It's also needed for your muscles to work normally. That's why so many people make it part of their evening.

Which type of magnesium should I take at night?

Glycinate (or bisglycinate) is the form our customers choose most. It tends to be easy on the stomach. Citrate is well absorbed too, but higher doses can have a mild laxative effect for some people. If you find capsules hard to swallow, a magnesium powder or hot chocolate is an easy swap.

When should I take magnesium?

An hour or so before bed suits most people. Having it with food can help if you have a sensitive stomach. Stick to the dose on the pack, and if you take more than one product with magnesium in it, add up the total.

Is melatonin available over the counter in the UK?

No. Unlike in the US, melatonin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, so it can't be sold as a food supplement here. If you think it might help you, speak to your GP.

What is L-theanine?

It's an amino acid found naturally in green and black tea. You can take it on its own or as part of a blend, and it's caffeine-free. Browse our full range of L-theanine supplements.

Are there sleep supplements for menopause?

Yes. Several formulas are made for perimenopause and menopause, when many women notice their sleep changes. DR.VEGAN PeriMenoFriend is the best seller in this collection. For the full range, see our menopause supplements.

Can I take sleep supplements every night?

Most are designed for daily use, as long as you follow the recommended dose. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first. The same goes if poor sleep has been going on for a while, as there may be an underlying cause.
