The New Antioxidants You Need To Know About

Vitamin C is an essential in your skincare arsenal. As well as boosting radiance to stimulating collagen, vitamin C is most commonly known for its powerful antioxidant benefits. When applied to the skin, it shields against the prematurely ageing damage of environmental and lifestyle aggressors such as UV, pollution, poor diet, smoking, etc. No matter your age, antioxidants are crucial for preventing and correcting premature signs of ageing.

Due to its proven results, vitamin C is one of the most common antioxidants available. Unfortunately for me, I have a hard time using this powerhouse ingredient. I have tried it in a few formulas but my skin just does not agree and ends up breaking out. Desperate not to be left out of the antioxidant party, I have done my research into alternative ingredients that still pack a protective punch.

Superoxide Dismutase

It's not a new discovery, but brands really seem to have taken interest into the benefits of superoxide dismutase. Derived from yeast, superoxide is the main reactive oxygen species in each cell and is the body's natural way of out-competing the ongoing and very damaging effect of superoxide in cells.

Astaxanthin

The new kid on the antioxidant block, astaxanthin has been clinically proven to be 6,000 times more powerful in its protective capabilities than vitamin C. Derived from algae, is unique as it donates multiple electrons to multiple free radicals, so it can fight damage for longer than most.

Green Tea

You can boost your body's antioxidant defences from within by switching your usual brew to the green variety. However, if you're not a fan of a cuppa, applying a green tea serum topically will not only protect against ageing but prevents the weakening of the skin's support matrix.

Resveratrol

Derived from red grapes, resveratrol is a little different as it is amazing at repairing the damage of environmental aggressors, as well as preventing it. It stimulates collagen production, firming the skin and restoring a plump, smooth appearance.
