In Conversation With BREAD Beauty Supply's Founder Maeva Heim: Simplifying Hair Care For Curls, Coils, and Kinks.
Founded by Maeva Heim in 2020, BREAD Beauty Supply, a Black-owned haircare brand, provides a minimalist, yet effective line of haircare products tailored to meet the needs of people with kinky, coily, or curly hair. Focusing on providing high-quality, essential, and time-saving haircare for curly hair, BREAD Beauty Supply simplifies textured haircare routines, their minimalist hair creams, cleansers, and nourishing hair oils, hydrating, defining, and enhancing your curls without weighing them down.
Chatting with Maeva, we found out more about her inspiration behind the revolutionary haircare brand, finding out why she strived for change in the haircare industry, and what plans she has for the future of BREAD Beauty Supply.
Inspired by her mother’s hair salon in Perth, Maeva wanted to create a brand that not only catered to diverse hair types, but also prioritised clean, uncomplicated ingredients, and fun, practical solutions for everyday haircare.
Maeva shares: "My first foray into beauty was back in the 90’s at my Mother’s African Hair Braiding salon. It was one of the very first African hair salons in the entire country, and one of my very first experiences in the beauty industry. From the age of 10 I would spend my weekends there braiding customers’ hair, sweeping the floors, answering the phone, and managing the booking diary. It was a lot like playing ‘shops’, but with a real cash register! We would import a lot of haircare products from the US that were designed for textured hair and sell them in the salon. That’s how I initially became familiar with the category and what was available in the market for curly and textured hair."
Maeva explains: "It wasn’t until I went on a trip to the United States when I stumbled upon a big gap in the market for women like me, who have curly or coily hair. I couldn’t find any brands on the market catering to my hair type that I could relate to. All of the brands I came across felt dated. They all seemed to speak in the same way, look the exact same, and the product selection was incredibly confusing. I was extremely overwhelmed and confused. I just wanted to know how to wash my hair, and felt like brands weren’t providing that guidance in a super simple, time efficient way. It was in that moment I realised the idea of what I wanted from a brand in this space simply wasn’t out there, I desperately wanted a brand like BREAD to exist, so I had to build it."

Meava shares: "BREAD started in basics; shampoos, conditioners, oils, and we’ve since evolved based on customer feedback to dive deeper into styling products. People really respond to our stylers, so we’re leaning into that more. In the next five years you can expect the BREAD universe to expand into other categories."
