Meet The Founders

Meeting in South Africa, Altruist founders, Andrew Bernie, a consultant dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon, and David Westerbeek van Eerten, an economist, bonded over their love of surfing, creating Altruist sunscreen through their passion for sun protection and skin health.

Hoping to reduce skin cancer instances and promote better awareness and education around skin health, the duo worked with some of the best formulation scientists in Europe, creating premium quality and affordable sunscreen that keeps your skin shielded from the sun.

Why Is Sunscreen Important?

Preventing UV radiation from reaching your skin, sunscreen protects against skin cancer, sunburn, premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and heat-related illnesses like sunstroke, so it's essential that it's worn year-round to minimise damage to your health.

Skin cancer occurs when UV radiation hits your skin, damaging the DNA in your skin cells and leading to mutations. Over time these mutations can accumulate, causing the cells to uncontrollably grow and divide, eventually leading to cancerous tumours in your skin.

Applying a high-factor sunscreen is a simple and effective way to prevent UV rays from reaching your skin, minimising sunburn and DNA damage that can increase your risk of skin cancer.

What Do The Different SPFs And UV Ratings Mean?

Overwhelmed by the different SPF levels and UV ratings? We’re here to help!

UV radiation is a form of energy produced by the sun and can be divided into three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC, the most common being UVA and UVB which can cause skin cancer.

UVB radiation is the one that causes sunburn, enables vitamin D production, and causes skin cancer, whereas UVA causes photageing, leading to wrinkles and brown spots, and also cancer.

SPF indicates UVB protection and stands for Sun Protection Factor, the number indicating the number of times longer you can stay in the sun before burning, compared to wearing no sunscreen.

The amount of UVB radiation that’s filtered out varies with different SPF levels:

  • SPF15 blocks 93% of UVB radiation
  • SPF30 blocks 96.7% UVB radiation
  • SPF50 blocks 98.3% UVB radiation

To ensure you have maximum protection against skin cancer it’s always better to aim for the highest SPF rating you can, preventing the maximum amount of UVB radiation from reaching your skin.
