Get To Know ANDY'S MAN CLUB: It's Okay To Talk
Working to end the stigma surrounding men's mental health, ANDY'S MAN CLUB are harnessing the power of conversation to help prevent suicide in men. The charity offers free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups all across the UK to help men in their time of need and to push the important message: #ItsOkayToTalk.
With over 2,800 men using the ANDY'S MAN CLUB sessions weekly, the team are truly changing men's lives for the better. With an army of 900+ volunteers on board, the clubs are a safe haven free from judgement where every man is welcomed to talk and to listen over a biscuit and a brew.
Where Did ANDY'S MAN CLUB Come From?
In early 2016, aged just 23, Andrew Roberts sadly took his own life. His family were, of course, devastated by the cruel loss, and alongside their grief, they were truly shocked by his suicide as they had no inkling that he was suffering and struggling so much.
Wanting to understand more, the family looked deeper into men's mental health and male suicide, and they soon discovered that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50.
Despite this, there is a huge cultural stigma in the UK around men's mental health. A stigma that Andrew's family wanted to fight with the view to help other men and try to prevent more cases of male suicide.
Formed by Andrew's mum, Elaine, and Andrew's brother-in-law, Luke, ANDY'S MAN CLUB was formed - a group where men aged 18 and above are welcomed to speak openly about their mental health.
The charity is completely volunteer-led, and the vast majority of group facilitators have come to their positions after having first interacted with the club as one of those very men in need of support.
The first club took place in mid-2016, where nine men met in a small room in the Yorkshire town of Halifax and sat and talked through their issues. The men in attendance mutually agreed there was a magic in the room that night that had to be shared. The start of a movement that has now grown faster than anyone first involved could have anticipated. Now, the club has groups at almost 100 locations across three counties of the UK and is a safe, welcoming space for men in need of mental health suuport.
